Toilet crisis averted…June 30, 2008 – IPODERAC – 10:30 am

First, cause I know you all care, we can flush toilet paper…whew!

Anyway, I’m writing as we have a break before we start working so…

Today so far…

We (the “adults”) woke pretty early and met with Miguel, Nacho and Paco to discuss the plan for the week. They were really efficient in planning who will be doing what. On the planned projects for the week include painting the soap making room, offices, installing the soccer field, general maintenance and crop work (I’ll check the list later and update y’all if I’ve missed anything.)

We have broken up into 8 “teams” that will rotate through the week on all the projects. Mine and Katie’s group, Corazon (you have to say it all hushed and mafia like…we’re hearts because we all drew a heart from a deck of cards…thats how we randomly picked the groups) is first up on house chores. That means we’re in charge of today’s cleaning and food. And can I say again how thankful I am that we can flush toilet paper…I REALLY didn’t want to have to pick up a bunch of bags of crap. Some groups will be working on the other projects around the compound.

After getting into our work groups we had a tour of the grounds. We saw the goat pens, the cheese “factory” (I’m sure there is a real name for a cheese “factory” but I don’t know what it is), the kitchen, dorms, woodworking room, computer lab, etc. We found out that the gourmet cheese they make accounts for 50% of their operating budget and the soap another 10%.

The place is beautiful and from where I sit I can see the volcano. The temperature is perfect not to hot and not too cold. They tell me that it rains nearly every afternoon.

Well that’s all for now! I have to round up Corazon (said all hushed and menacing) and find our cleaning supplies. Which, by the way, I think Katie has the sweet deal with the girls…they are all organized and clean…I have a feeling my Courazon (said all hushed and menacing) brothers are not quite as together.

Ok til later (for real this time.)
